The Sport of Giving, Inc.

The Sport of Giving, Inc. Board of Directors functions to advise, assist and aid in our efforts to support breast cancer care and prevention in local communities

 

 Founder and President

Sheila Stevens is a Realtor with Storey Morrow Company and has earned designations as a Fine Home, E Pro,  and Relocation Specialist by being named a Million dollar producer for 5 years, Presidents Circle -- Top 5% Nationwide for Prudential 2006 -2009 and being #11 in sales for Prudential Georgia Realty in 2007. In 2001, Sheila founded The Sport of Giving, formerly Volley For A Cure and VolleyFest, in remembrance of her mother, Joan Healan Glover, applying her passion for tennis and love of the Lord. Sheila has a hands on approach to every aspect of The Sport of Giving every year. In 2005, she was nominated for a Legacy Award from the United Way in Gwinnett county as one of Gwinnett's exemplary women. In 2008 Sheila won the United Way "Treasure" Legacy Award for Gwinnett County's exemplary women.  Also in 2008 Sheila was named "Best of Gwinnett, REALTOR".  2008 also brought The Sport of Giving a wonderful acolade with winning a national award "Realtor Magazine -- Good Neighbor Award. She is a native of Georgia, living in Gwinnett and Hall counties for the last 27 years. She has been involved with many charitable and school organizations over the years. Sheila and her husband of 18 years, Rick Stevens, live in Suwanee with their two children Austin and Camie. On a personal note, Sheila enjoys spending time with her family and friends, reading, traveling, tennis and her bible study group.

 

  

Vice President and Treasurer

Lynn Drew Roberts joined the grass roots Volley For A Cure in it’s second year, 2001, after her mother –in-law fell victim to breast cancer.  With a background of business skills,  and actively serving the community, schools and church for many years; Lynn jumped wholeheartedly into Volley For A Cure now The Sport of Giving, bringing everything she could to the table to improve local community breast cancer care.  Husband, Mickey Roberts; Daughter Jessica and her husband Nick; and daughter Cameron are Lynn’s motivating reasons to continue this fight against breast cancer.   The positive, energy-charged environment and loving fellowship of women working together single-mindedly in The Sport of Giving events is also a powerful motivator and self-fulfilling.   An Atlanta native, Lynn grew up loving and playing various sports and still plays tennis and golf in the Atlanta suburb of Duluth.

 

 

Secretary

Kristen Sapp was born in Marietta, Ohio, and grew up in Parkersburg, WV. She received a BS in Marketing from Marshall University. After twelve moves to various cities within the General Electric Corporate environment, Atlanta became the Sapp family's permanent home in 1999. She, along with her husband, David and sons, Jonathan, Jamie and Andrew reside in the Sugarloaf community. Her commitment to VolleyFest began as a committee member in 2003 and expanded to Sugarloaf Co-chair in 2005. As Secretary she hopes to continue to help make a difference in the care and prevention of breast cancer in the community

 
 

 

 

 Spokesman and Medical Advisor

 Dr. David Whiteman is a Board Certified Plastic & Reconstruction Surgeon in both the United States and Canada. He has been practicing Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in Atlanta, GA since 1993 and maintains privileges at many nationally accredited hospitals & surgical centers throughout Atlanta. Dr. Whiteman received his medical degree with the gold medal honors from the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario Canada. He completed his residency at St. Michaels Hospital in Toronto and the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. Dr. Whiteman went on to complete his fellowship training at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. in advanced techniques of cosmetic surgery and breast reconstruction. Dr. Whiteman is dedicated to breast cancer research and education. Media Director

Karyn Greer joined 11Alive News in August of 1999. She serves the station as a reporter for 11Alive's Special Projects Unit as well as an 11Alive News anchor for 11Alive Weekend at 6 & 11 p.m. Karyn is also the managing editor and primary anchor for UPN Atlanta News at Ten. Karyn came to 11Alive from WGNX-TV, also in Atlanta, where she completed a ten-year tenure in the primary co-anchor position for that station's weeknight newscasts. Greer began her broadcast career in 1983 at WCIA-TV in Champaign, Illinois. She moved to WICD-TV the following year where she worked as a weekend anchor/reporter. She then spent three years in Charleston, South Carolina where she was the solo anchor for the highest rated newscast in the market. A long-time Atlanta resident, Karyn is well known in the local television market and has a history of hands-on community involvement. She is the past president of the Atlanta Press Club and currently serves on the Board of Governor's for the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. The Emmy award winning anchor is also a member of the Magnolia chapter of The Links Inc. a board member of the Arthritis Foundation, on the board of the Chattahoochee Nature Center and a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. Throughout her career she has been the recipient of numerous awards honoring both her professional work and community contributions. Karyn is a native of Chicago, Illinois. In her free time she enjoys reading and traveling with her husband Tony and being a soccer and swim mom to their sons, Kyle and Tyler

 

Tennis Director

Alan Hartley is originally from Perth, West Australia. He attended the West Australian College of Advanced Education and started a career in education. His first teaching assignments took him to small farming towns throughout Australia where he taught elementary school. In 1984, Alan came to Atlanta and spent time teaching at North Fulton Tennis Center, Chimney Springs, Huntcliff. Returning to Australia in 1988, teaching at his childhood club - Cottesloe Tennis Club in Perth. Retuning to Atlanta in 1994 as Tennis Director of The Fields Club for 11years. Alan is currently the Tennis Director of The River Club in Suwanee. Alan enjoys tennis immensely and looks forward to the opportunity to help Volleyfest grow and prosper. It is Alan’s hope that Volleyfest can continue to be the best Charity Tennis event in Atlanta.

  

 

 

Public Relations Director

Elizabeth (Beth) McCauley is President of McCauley Marketing, a division of McCauley Services. McCauley Services is a family business owned and operated by Beth and her husband Hank. Beth formed the Marketing portion of the business in 2001. She leads her team in analyzing, developing & strengthening company operations, business partnerships and marketing strategies. Beth has over 22 years experience in the area of marketing and customer relations, 14 years experience in the healthcare & fitness industries and over 12 years experience working with general contractors. These diverse experiences have strengthened her ability to better analyze customer needs. Beth earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Georgia State University. Beth sits on the Board of Directors as Public Relations Director for Volley Fest, a breast cancer initiative. Mentoring and training special people in need is another way Beth makes a significant contribution in our community; additional activities include breast cancer prevention & awareness, multiple sclerosis and animal rescue

 

 

 

Gwinnett Medical Systems Liason

Jeff Nowlin is the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for the Gwinnett Health System and President of Gwinnett Medical Center - Lawrenceville.  Jeff has worked in the healthcare field for over 15 years, including executive positions in Houston, Texas and Tulsa, Oklahoma.  He currently serves and/or has served on various local boards and civic committees including the United Way, the American College of Healthcare Executives, The West Houston Chamber of Commerce, and the Alumni Board for Washington University Healthcare Administration Program.

 Jeff is a graduate of Baylor University (Waco, TX) and The Washington University School of Medicine (St. Louis, MO).  In addition, he is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives.  Jeff is married with two children and currently resides in Suwanee, Georgia.

 

 

 

East Region Vice President Coca-Cola Foodservice & Hospitality Division

Ben Shanley is Vice President, East Region, for Coca-Cola North America Foodservice Division. Ben leads the Foodservice sales organization with responsibility for 20 East Coast states. During his 24 years with Coca-Cola, Ben has held positions of increasing responsibility including, Managing Director of Cold Drink Development and Director of Chain Sales. Ben is a member of the Board of Directors and the Executive Committees for both NYC and Company and the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau. Ben is also a member of the Georgia Restaurant Association Corporate Sponsorship Advisory Committee. Additionally, Ben is on the Board of Directors for the Southern Amateur Hockey Association. He also coaches youth hockey in Atlanta. Ben is married to JoAnn Shanley, and they have two sons Brett and Bryan. Ben attended Northern Michigan University on a full athletic scholarship where he received a degree in business

 

 

 Vice President RelayHealth Strategy and Business Development

 Mark Edelstein is vice president of Strategy and Business Development for RelayHealth, the connectivity business unit of McKesson. Mark has over 20 years of experience in sales leadership and market development with world class healthcare technology and services organizations. Prior to joining RelayHealth Mark  held several successful leadership roles for startup, growth and mature healthcare technology companies  including Initiate Systems, a newly acquired IBM company, Siemens  and Premier.  Mark graduated cum laude, from the University of Pittsburgh, earning both a BS in Business and BA in Communications. Originally from Pennsylvania, he and his wife Teri have called Georgia their home since 1984   and reside in JohnsCreek.  They have two sons, Jordan, 19 a sophomore at the University of GA and Alex, 16 a sophomore at Northview High.  Mark’s life long goal is and continues to be to have a positive impact on the availability, delivery and quality of healthcare in the United States.
